When the balance
of platelets is disrupted
Platelets (thrombocytes) play a central role in blood clotting. When an injury occurs, they ensure that the blood clots and wounds are sealed quickly. If their number is too low or too high — or if they do not function properly — this can lead to an increased tendency to bleed or to thrombosis. At first glance, disorders in this area may seem unspectacular, but they can have serious consequences. For this reason, thorough and timely diagnostic clarification is essential — and this is exactly what I offer in my practice.

Typical symptoms and diagnoses
Typical symptoms and diagnoses
In my practice, I frequently encounter the following clinical questions:
- Reduced platelet count (thrombocytopenia) – for example due to medication, infections, autoimmune processes, or congenital conditions
- Increased platelet count (thrombocytosis) – often reactive (e.g. in the context of infections), but sometimes an expression of a chronic blood disorder such as essential thrombocythaemia
- Platelet dysfunction – even with a normal platelet count, blood clotting may be impaired
- Increased tendency to bleed or unexplained bruising
- Thrombosis and/or embolismof unclear cause or with a family history
Such changes are often triggered by harmless factors, but in some cases they may be caused by more serious conditions — this is where specialist expertise is essential.
Diagnostics with precision
Diagnostics with precision
Diagnostics begin with a detailed medical history: What symptoms are present? Which medications are being taken? Are there any bleeding events or clotting disorders in the family?
This is followed by targeted haematological laboratory testing, in which not only the number of platelets but also their structure and function are assessed. I commission these specialised analyses exclusively in experienced haematological laboratories in order to avoid sources of error.
If necessary, I supplement the evaluation with imaging procedures or consult colleagues from related medical specialties.
Rapid assessment – reliable evaluation
Rapid assessment – reliable evaluation
Especially in disorders of blood coagulation, it is important to determine quickly whether immediate action is required or whether careful observation is sufficient. I assess efficiently and reliably whether the cause is harmless or whether further diagnostic or therapeutic measures are necessary.
Thanks to my many years of experience in the field of coagulation medicine and my excellent network in research and clinical practice, I am able to offer my patients highly qualified assessment and care.
